About Tertiary Grants

The Ngāti Awa Tertiary Grant is offered to all eligible Ngāti Awa Tertiary students.

To qualify for a Ngāti Awa Tertiary Grant, applicants are required to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • be registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa as a member of Ngāti Awa; and

  • be enrolled as a full-time student in the second or subsequent year of their current programme of tertiary study at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary institute; and

  • ensure that their application and supporting documentation are completed online by the closing date.


    Documentation Requirements:

  • Proof of enrolment

  • Fee receipt for the year you are studying

  • Verified copy of bank account details


About Tertiary Scholarships

The Ngāti Awa Tertiary Grant is offered to all eligible Ngāti Awa Tertiary students.

Applications from those students who are enrolled in second-year Trade or Apprentice training in the fields of study may be considered. 

To qualify for a Ngāti Awa Tertiary Scholarship, applicants are required to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • be registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa as a member of Ngāti Awa; and

  • be enrolled in Bachelor, Master, or Doctorate study and in the second or subsequent year of their current programme of tertiary study; and

  • be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary Institution; and

Be studying in the fields:

  • Law / Commerce / Health Science / Applied Science / Mātauranga Māori / Environmental Studies / Agriculture

Be achieving academic excellence; and

Be engaged with and participating in Hapū, Marae or Iwi activities and events; and

Ensure that their application and supporting documentation are completed online by the closing date. 

Scholarship recipients will have grades of at least a "B" average and participate in Hapū and Iwi activities. Other extra-curricular activities will also contribute to a successful application. 

Scholarships Terms

  • The scholarship will be for one year.

  • Only one scholarship will be awarded in each of the six categories per annum. 

  • Successful applicants will be required to attend the Annual General Meeting of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa in November 2025

  • Successful applicants will be required to submit a profile the Annual Report in the year the Scholarship is awarded.

  • Termination of or withdrawal from the programme of study for which the scholarship has been awarded shall constitute immediate termination of the scholarship. Any subsequent applicants will consider the applicant's prior termination and withdrawal from study. 

  • Where an applicant withdraws from their course of study either prior to receiving the scholarship or during the academic year, they shall provide a written explanation of their withdrawal to Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa. 

Kaumātua Endorsement

Your endorsement must:

  • Be signed by a Ngāti Awa Kaumātua

 It can include:

  • Whakapapa 

  • Your participation with your Hapū or Iwi

  • How the Kaumātua knows you. (Nanny, Uncle etc)

Personal Statement

Your endorsement must:

  • Information about yourself

  • Your participation with your Hapū or Iwi 

  • What you are studying and what led you to that field

  • Information about your Whānau

  • What you want for your future
