About Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa
The key role of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa is to support the achievement of the aspirations of the iwi and its long-term vision.
Guiding the future of Ngāti Awa
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa is the mandated entity recognised by the Crown as a representative of Ngāti Awa, responsible for managing the collective affairs of the iwi members in accordance with the Charter.
To support the aspirations of Ngāti Awa, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa will act as a kaiarahi (guide) and kaitiaki (protector) for ngā uri me ngā hapū o Ngāti Awa on this journey towards the future.
We will provide responsible leadership that reflects the voices and values of Ngāti Awa and focus on long-term self-determined development of Ngāti Awa, while working together with our marae and hapū and within our communities.
We understand that strengthening our culture, our environment, our resources and our people requires a long-term, inclusive, values-based approach.
This includes:
Providing services to empower and strengthen Ngāti Awa whānau, hapū, and iwi.
Ensuring the sustainable management of collectively held assets to meet the needs of current and future generations.

Kaitiakitanga
Our obligation to protect our culture, environment, resources, and people for current and future generations is embodied in our Taiao Department, which provides leadership and support to members in managing our natural resources according to our cultural practices.

Ngāti Awatanga
We embrace Ngati Awatanga by protecting our language and culture. This guides our practical efforts in maintaining IT infrastructure and data management systems, preserving our heritage through Ngāti Awa Research and Archives, and administering Iwi Registration to connect our people.

Manaakitanga
We embrace Manaakitanga, our shared duty to care for one another - through community projects and events, while managing and implementing Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa's Cultural, Te Reo, and Leadership Strategies to strengthen our collective well-being and cultural vitality.
Under the Rūnanga Act, the Rūnanga administers its assets for the benefit of present and future members of Ngāti Awa in accordance with the Charter, and guided by the tikanga and values of Ngāti Awa.
Article Two established a partnership with the Crown, and
Article Three established our rights as tangata whenua and citizens of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
