Tertiary Grants and Scholarships

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa recognises the immense value of education and is fully committed to supporting you in your lifelong learning journey. Background Information

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa represents the interests of more than 26,000 registered descendants of Ngāti Awa. Based in Whakatāne, the Rūnanga was established in 2005 to receive and manage the Ngāti Awa Treaty Settlement assets.

The Rūnanga is governed by an elected Board of Representatives from each of the 22 hapu of Ngāti Awa.

Who can apply?
  • All tertiary grant and scholarship applicants are required to be registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa as a member of Ngāti Awa.
  • Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa Tertiary Grants and Scholarships are awarded to full-time tertiary students.
  • Students must be enrolled in their second or subsequent year of study at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary Institution.
Please read through the eligibility criteria before applying for a grant or scholarship. Applications open Monday, 12th February.

Applications must be submitted with all supporting documents by 4.00 pm Friday, 12th April 2024​



Terminology
  • Member of Ngāti Awa:
    • A registered member of Ngāti Awa as described in Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa Charter 2005.
  • Recognised New Zealand Tertiary Institution:
    • Private training establishment approved and registered with NZQA, or a publicly funded state education provider approved and registered by the Ministry of Education.
  • Academic Excellence:
    • Grade Point Average is scored on a scale from 1 to 9, where 9 is the highest and based on actual grades achieved over an academic year. 
  • Full-time:
    • The student is undertaking a 32-52 week course with a full-time equivalent of 1.0 EFTS.
  • Kaumātua Endorsement:
    • Refers to the validation of your personal statement, which is to be signed off by a Ngāti Awa kaumātua.
  • Engagement with Marae, Hapū, and Iwi:
    • High level of engagement = 3 (leadership and initiative are evident)
    • Medium level of engagement = 2 (ongoing participation and contribution to whānau, Hapū, and Iwi)
    • Low level of engagement = 1 (Regular contact is evident although participation and contribution are minimal)

Tertiary Grants

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED FOR 2024

The Ngāti Awa Tertiary Grants are available to all eligible tertiary students registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa.

Applicants must:

  • be registered as a Member of Ngāti Awa; and
  • be in their second year or subsequent year of study; and
  • be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary Institution; and
  • complete the online application form and provide all required documentation on time.

Applicants must provide:

  • Confirmation of enrolment
  • Fees receipt for 2024
  • Verification of bank account
  • Academic records for 2023 or previous years’ of study.
 

Tertiary Scholarship

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED FOR 2024

The Ngāti Awa Scholarships are awarded to full-time tertiary students registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa, who are enrolled to undertake bachelor, postgraduate, master’s or doctorate(PhD) study at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary Institute.

Applications from those students who are enrolled in second-year Trade or Apprentice training in the fields listed of study may be considered. 

Applicants must:

  • be registered as a Member of Ngāti Awa; and
  • be in their second year or subsequent year of study; and
  • be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary Institution; and
  • be enrolled in bachelor, postgraduate, master’s or doctorate(PhD) study; and
  • be studying in the fields of
    • Law
    • Commerce
    • Health Science
    • Applied Science
    • Mātauranga Māori
    • Environmental/Agriculture
  • be achieving academic excellence; and
  • be engaged with and participating in Hapū, Marae or Iwi activities and events; and
  • complete the online application form and provide all required documentation on time.

Applicants must provide:

  • Confirmation of enrolment
  • Fees receipt for 2024
  • Verification of bank account
  • Academic records for 2023 or previous years’ of study; and
  • Personal Statement including a Ngāti Awa kaumātua endorsement.

Your personal statement can include:

  • Information about yourself
  • Your participation with your Hapū or Iwi 
  • What you want for your future
Your personal statement must be signed off by a Ngāti Awa kaumātua.
  • The scholarship will be for one year.
  • Only one scholarship will be awarded in each of the six categories per annum.
  • Successful applicants will be required to attend the Annual General Meeting of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa in November 2024
  • Termination of or withdrawal from the programme of study for which the scholarship has been awarded shall constitute immediate termination of the scholarship.
  • If an applicant withdraws from their course of study either before receiving the scholarship or during the academic year, they will not be eligible for future scholarship consideration unless they provide a written explanation of their withdrawal to Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa.
