22 Mandated Hapū and 19 Marae of Ngāti Awa
The 22 Hapū represent a mixture of those that have existed from the time of the Raupatu to today 16 in total, from an erstwhile number of 30; those that have been revived after having disappeared for some time (Te Warahoe, Ngāti Maumoana, and Wharepaia); and those that are new (Te Kahupaake, Tāmaki Makaurau, and Pōneke, the latter two formed to represent those of Ngāti Awa living in Auckland and Wellington respectively).
