2022 Tertiary Scholarships and Education Grants

The Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa Tertiary and Scholarships are awarded to full-time tertiary students registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa.

Students must be enrolled in their second or subsequent year of study at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary Institution. 

All Applicants must:

  • be registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa as a member of Ngāti Awa; and
  • be enrolled as a fulltime student in the second or subsequent year of their current programme of tertiary study at a recognised New Zealand Tertiary institute; and
  • ensure that their application and supporting documentation are completed online by the closing date

TERTIARY SCHOLARSHIPS

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa offers eight tertiary scholarships to eligible students who fit the criteria above as well as:

  • be enrolled in Bachelor, Masters or Doctorate study and in the second or subsequent year of their current programme of tertiary study; and
  • be engaged with and participating in Hapū, Marae or Iwi activities and events;
  • Other extra – curricular activities may also contribute to a successful application.
  • be achieving academic excellence and have grades of at least a “B” average.
  • be studying in the fields of
  1. Matauranga Māori
  2. Commerce
  3. Medical/Health Science
  4. Medical/Health Science
  5. Applied Science/Science
  6. Resource and Environmental Planning
  7. Resource and Environmental Planning (3rd or 4th year student with option for internship)
  8. Law;

 

Scholarship Value

The scholarships are valued at a minimum of $1,500. A maximum of eight Scholarships will be awarded in any year.

Scholarship Terms

  • Scholarships will be awarded for 1 year.
  • Only one Scholarship will be awarded in each of the eight scholarship categories per annum.
  • Applicants will be required to attend the Annual General Meeting of Te Rūnanga O Ngāti Awa in the year the Scholarship is awarded.
  • Successful applicants will be required to submit a profile the Annual Report in the year the Scholarship is awarded.
  • Where an applicant withdraws from their course of study either prior to receiving the scholarship or during the academic year, they will provide Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa with a written explanation of their withdrawal.
  • Termination of or withdrawal from the programme of study for which the Scholarship has been awarded shall constitute immediate termination of the scholarship. Any subsequent applications will consider the applicant’s prior termination and withdrawal from study.

  • Be signed by a Ngāti Awa Kaumatua
It can include

  • Whakapapa 
  • Your participation with your Hapū or Iwi 
  • How the Kaumatua knows you. (Nanny, Uncle etc)

Personal Statement

Your personal statement can include

  • Information about yourself
  • Your participation with your Hapū or Iwi 
  • What you are studying and what lead you to that field
  • Information about your Whanau
  • What you want for your future
